Okay so you log on your new AIM name right, and you join the spies8 AIM chat (see next post if you don't know how to do this), and you see like a million different people playing mafia hiding behind characters. What are ya supposed to talk about with these random people?
Anything really! Now's the time to kick back, relax, and just chat it up with the people you will hopefully be playing spies with for a long time. The first day or two is so different. Once things start to kick off, you'll be talking about the latest imprisonment, spy suspicionm or exile target day in day out.
Today is like the pre-game check-in, the chatter in a forum mafia thread before roles are handed out, or the conversation in a chat mafia game before it fills up. For now you should just get to know people - Spies is different in that it gets a little more personal with all the AIM interaction. Yes you are behind fictional characters but getting to know each other well is crucial.
Join the AIM chat room spies8 and chat it up with everybody, or get to know the others one-on-one via individual chats. Meeting all these people may seem a daunting task at first, but remember that you will be divided into two teams and, after tonight's live chat, will only be allowed to talk to those people in your team. Fourteen other people is a lot more manageable than twenty nine!
So what to talk about? You all have the love of mafia in common. While you shouldn't talk about exactly where you play mafia or your username there you can talk generally about games you enjoyed, whether in real life or online.
You can talk about your character, their likes and interests, their life.
You can also talk about your interests as if they were your characters'. Your favorite movies, books, places to go, tv shows, internet sites, actors/actresses, friends, sports, etc. You can put a little of yourself into your character. In that way you can bond with other players.
How far you want to take the 'roleplay' aspect of the fictional characters you are playing as is up to you. Some people just use it to conceal their alias and play mafia normally. Others use it to create an engaging character with a different personality or gameplay style. It's completely up to you - you can do either extreme or find somewhere fun in the middle.
Get to know the other people and talk and see if they are trustworthy.
The best way to play the game and talk with your fellow citizens is to log onto your AIM name. AIM is an integral part of Spies. Please log on as much as you possibly can so that you can meet and greet everyone in your team. Perhaps you could always leave it on but keep an away message up. If you can't reach them due to conflicting schedules, I encourage you to use the board's private message system. To do so, just click the "0 messages" link in dark blue in that top box where it says "Hey, [your name] you have..." and "Spies 8: The Bribe" in the left.
