was away with friends and whilst waiting for airport taxis we played mafia for three hours.
Let me tell you that in real life it is hilarious!! Its hard to get a grip first, but everyone LOVED it once they knew how to play. Although one or two friends always seemed really shifty no matter what they were.
Has anyone ever played IRL?

Unfortunately no. I'd love to, but have never had the chance.

Yeah one friend always uses his hands and has CRAZY theories. Then both times he was mafia he sat there with his arms folded and had no crazy theories. HELLO?
I was particularly good, I established myself as being shifty and being hissy fitty and dominating. And just kept that up as Mafia, except once when my Mafia partner started accusing me so I pretended to have a huge argument saying WHY AM I MAFIA HOW COULD I BE, to make him look good.

I've played in person back while I was still in the church youth group, and although it was fun, it was hardly much in the way of strategic play so much as it was "I think it's Jake because he smiles too much." or similarily silly stuff.
Still was fun to do just for giggles, even if it wouldn't be my favorite way to play.

I went to GenCon again (the gaming convention) and played mafia every night - logged maybe 20 hours over 3 days. So much fun.
One group pulled me into a 5 player version that was entertaining. Not my favorite, but fun to try. Setup: 5 players, no moderator. 1 werewolf, 1 possessed (on the side of the werewolf), 1 seer, 1 hunter (survives if alive at the final 2), and 1 plain vanilla townie. Whoever gets voted out first, if not the werewolf, becomes the moderator to convey the target of the single night kill.
I was the werewolf twice and the vanilla townie once. Won all 3 games. Being a bad guy was so stressful, but also delightful.
The one downside of playing at GenCon is anyone can join, so you have a fair number of quiet people who come because it gives them something to do at night where they can still feel social. So in your circle of 15, you'll have anywhere from 1-5 people who will sit there and not do anything. This frustrated the hell out of me the first time I went to GenCon, but I took a different approach this year and tried to be more encouraging, more of a mentor (like I was with Rondak). I had some success, and in the long-term I know it will pay off, both in terms of better players and in terms of me gaining more trust, which I can abuse when I'm a werewolf. EVIL!

Man, I miss IRL mafia. The last time I played was when I went to Boston over Christmas break last year to meet a bunch of people from a Werewolf forum. We had twenty-something of us crammed into one apartment, but it was a lot of fun. My favorite of the games we played is the one where I fake-revealed as the Seer (as a wolf, of course) and promptly bussed my two packmates in order to get the real Seer lynched at endgame.
