Rules about copying / pasting on AIM

The rule is "You can't copy anything. That is, except..." two things. This will hopefully make it easier to understand. The things you are allowed to copy are:
Note! Of course you can copy/paste a entire conversation into your confessional to record it. You are strongly suggested to do this for all interesting, striking, or worthwhile conversations, and are required to post at least two full private AIM conversations per Episode. Failure to do so results in self-votes.
Finally, do not ask or request certain chat transcripts or sections of private AIM chat from others of a specific time or topic, doing so will result in penalty self-votes or possible expulsion. RESPONDING TO A REQUEST FOR A SPECIFIC CHAT will receive the exact same penalty as asking for one. Voluntary providing of chats is okay as long as you don't ask or insinuate that you'd like to see them just to get people to do it. It's tempting, but don't ask to see certain private AIM chat transcripts. You can still ask someone you had an AIM chat with to send the whole thing to you so you can copy/paste it in your confessional, or to review it, or to send you a public group AIM chat.
So why all the fuss over this? There's some game-breaking problems AIM chat introduces that I think everybody agrees would be just silly to be part of the game. These things are not mafia. Even the smaller problems can have significant disadvantages for the Spies because the game is so long and there are so many logged conversations.
For example, pretend there is a contentious Exile with the vote changing right up to the last 5 minutes of the deadline. Undoubtedly, Spies will be chatting with each other about Spy things during this time period. What would not be okay is for someone to demand of Spy A to provide AIM conversations he had privately during those five minutes. Of course the Spies can't produce their private conversations because they were strategizing. You can imagine how dumb it would be if Citizen B were to say to a Secret Spy A: "Show me the whole private conversation you had with (Secret Spy Z) during those last 5 minutes. I know you were talking with him. You have 2 minutes to copy it or I know you're making it up."
The game we are playing is not "figure out which two people are not individually, privately talking as Citizens on AIM" and that's why these rules are here. Spies do have "Citizen conversations" with each other in which they pretend to both be citizens. However, Spies do have lives so it's not a colossal amount. If one person were to post 20+ AIM citizen conversations they had with another person it's fairly likely that they both aren't Spies. If the other guy gets eliminated and is revealed to be a Spy it is fairly likely that the poster isn't a Spy because that's a lot of crap to just make up. Furthermore, if 45 days into the game someone was to decide to post every private AIM conversation they've recorded with all the eliminated Spies, and there's a lot of them, that pretty much clears them.
That is why these two specific activities are banned and will cause you to be removed from the game. The penalties listed at the top apply to posting an excessive amount of private AIM conversation and asking or responding to a specific chat request.
Hopefully these rules strike a compromise between gathering information using AIM and having the game run smoothly. Thanks.
- Anything in the spies8, spies8democrats, or spies8republicans AIM chat room is ok. [The official AIM buddy chat room is spies8 that you should join to speak with everyone.] It's a public space since anyone can enter at any time. You can post the entire chat transcript from the entire day there if you like. If you want to chat and have the complete transcript available publicly, consider joining the spies8 AIM chat room.
- A limited number of "small segments" of private AIM chat is okay. Here's the guideline: keep the copy/pasting SHORT and RARE. There is no maximum number of words you can copy because that's retarded. Please select the least amount you could copy and still have the segment make sense. A good guideline is 4-8 "lines" of chat from each person. If you want someone's reaction to a question, or thoughts on an issue, or anything else that is short, that's okay.
If you post it on the board and have to scroll, it's probably too much. "A limited number" means you can't just cut up the conversation into small parts and post it all. Use your discretion. If you are innocently copying/pasting too much I will ask you to cut back privately without penalty. If polite warnings fail to work, you will receive penalty self-votes at the next Exile, and if that doesn't work, you will be removed from the game.
